Visit Us at Two Upcoming Conferences

The Educational Technology Programs will be represented at two upcoming conferences in Michigan in March.  The first conference is the 2009 Michigan Science Teachers Association Conference which is being held at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center from March 5-7.  Come visit us at booth H.

The MACUL Conference 2009 is being held at Cobo Hall from March 18-20. This is a great conference for educators to learn more about technology and how it can be applied in the classroom. They have hands on workshops as well as presentations conducted by other educators and educational vendors. Several of our instructors (Carolyn McCarthy-Research Based Classroom Formative Assessments; Michael Partridge-Joomia! Free Content Management for Schools) will be presenting in pre-conference workshops on Wednesday March 18th, as well as doing information sessions on Thursday and Friday (Tammy Maginity -We’re Just Moodlin’ Along; Michael Partridge- Bringing Technology to Your Theater Arts Program; Eric Spicer- Explore, Engage, Empower: Using Interactive Tools in Your Classroom) Additionally, a number of teachers that graduated from our program will also be presenting in different sessions.

The Educational Technology Certificate Program, the Master’s in Educational Technology and the Confucius Institute will all be represented at booth #423 in the exhibitor hall. Come visit us and learn more about the certificate, endorsement and Master’s programs in Educational Technology. We’d be happy to provide a demonstration of our Certificate program classes.

Representatives from the Confucius Institute at MSU will also talk about their online materials developed with up-to-date technologies, such as podcasts; 3-D language learning environments (”Second Life”); and other multimedia learning materials that teach adult and K-12 students about Chinese language and culture.

We look forward to seeing you at either of these conferences!

Certificate News: Educational Technology Program in Plymouth, England

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

As Outreach Coordinator of the Educational Technology Certificate program I generally spend my days setting up new site locations throughout the State of Michigan, promoting our program to teachers throughout the world, attending conferences and developing promotional materials, updating the curriculum in our face to face and online classes, writing the articles for this quarterly newsletter, maintaining our program website and working on projects that take me to places like Dubai, UAE and Algeria.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, this summer provided me with a new opportunity to teach for our program in Plymouth, England.  This program is offered in an accelerated format allowing participants to take 3 courses, 9 graduate credits each summer as well as one online course during the second year in the program.  They complete the Master’s in Educational Technology within three years.  During the summer program most participants live on the campus of the University of Plymouth, which creates a close-knit and supportive atmosphere throughout the program. In addition, program participants come from all over the world making the interactions even more enriching.

Prior to leaving I didn’t know what to expect.  Spending 4 weeks in another country sounded exciting but it  was also a little intimidating for me to be gone that long.  After the first week I soon learned that although 4 weeks is a large chunk of time, it was going to fly by before I knew it.   The discussions of technology use in education, sharing new ideas, making new friends, and exploring a new country gave me the best learning experience I have ever had.

The students in my Certificate classes amazed me with their dedication, persistence and insatiable desire to learn new things.  Several students came in with only a very basic level of technology skills and they impressed me with their tenacity to keep up with the hectic schedule that an accelerated program demands.

But it wasn’t just all work and studying.  Students and instructors alike found time to relax and take in a bit of the English culture.  I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Jean-Pierre, our on-site manager for student life.  He arranged several activities, dinners, and other social events throughout the four weeks.  As he said several times throughout the program, he is dedicated to providing “royal service with a French touch”.

The combination of the variety of backgrounds and experiences of the participants, the amount of knowledge in the area of educational technology being shared, as well as the social and cultural opportunities made this an incredible learning experience.  I feel especially lucky to have been provided this wonderful opportunity and to have made some great connections with teachers from all around the world.

If you would like to learn more about this program you can visit our website at http://edutech.msu.edu/overseas.html.

Certificate/Masters Student Makes the Local News

We were very happy to hear that one of our current students in the Masters of Educational Technology program recently made the local news for a project she did in her CEP 812 course. Katie Gutteridge, a Science teacher at West Middle School in Grand Blanc, wrote and received a grant as a part of her TechQuest project in the third course of the Certificate program. The grant was to connect her students with NASA via a video conference.

On the day of the video conference her students were able to connect with NASA officials and ask them questions in regards to reading satellite photos of the earth. The students loved the opportunity to talk with a scientist directly from Johnson Space Center in Houston,Texas. Invitation for US classrooms to participate in the E3Link Project

Monday, December 10th, 2007

I am writing from Michigan State University about a ground breaking project linking high schools in the United States with high schools in Algeria. This “Partnership Schools Program,” funded by the U.S. State Department, is a collaborative program between Michigan State University, Creative Associates International in Washington, D.C., and the Algerian Ministry of National Education.

Over this past year we’ve built “bridges of understanding” between our two countries and the students who participated in the program. In 2007 students involved in the pilot project told their stories about their communities, cultures, and countries. The pilot project is now complete and the U.S. State Department has agreed to extend this important project for another semester (January through June of 2008). (more…)

Certificate Program Changes

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

It has been a year of change for the Certificate program at Michigan State. Our first big change was getting approval to offer the Educational Technology Endorsement in September. Since offering this new endorsement, Michigan’s Dept of Education has made some changes to all endorsements that has affected how we offer ours. Please read the article under College News for more details on these changes.

Another big change that ocurred was the updating of both the Certificate and Master’s websites. Both have a new look and added content to make it easier for educators to navigate. We are continuing to make updates and changes to keep the website fresh and full of the latest information.

Our next big change was to put the Certificate classes online. Kathryn Dirkin, a graduate of the Master’s program and a PhD student, worked with a team to put both the 1st year and 2nd year classes online. Our first online class was offered successfully in January and we are finishing up the third class in the series. The feedback we received regarding these courses has been very positive. Ana Urian, a student in CEP 812, said:

“This course is incredible! I certainly made the right decision to take ed. tech. courses for my prof. renewal. I cannot believe the amount of synapses that are connecting in my brain! I can even feel them at this point!”

While developing the online courses we made a few changes to our curriculum that we will be launching in our face to face classes this fall. We have added a large component of Web 2.0 technologies and web-based collaboration tools. Teachers will learn about how to create a blog, how to edit a wiki and how to create a podcast along with learning about other web-based collaboration tools such as Google Apps and Zoho.

In another big change we will be moving all of our courses over to the Angel course management system. We will continue to utilize our own portfolio and calendar system but they will now be integrated into Angel. Michigan State University just finished successfully upgrading Angel to the newest version providing our courses with an up-to-date course management system.

As the 2006-2007 school year comes to a close, I am amazed at the amount of changes that have ocurred in our program. As technology keeps changing and evolving so must our program. We are committed to offering the best courses in the field of educational technology and will work hard to keep our program fresh and relevant to all educators. If you haven’t signed up for our program yet, this is a great time to check us out.

The Educational Technology Certificate Goes Virtual

Are you too busy to devote chunks of time to a face-to-face professional development program? Perhaps you enjoy learning in your own location and at a time that is convenient for you. We have made it easy for you to get the professional development you need when it is convenient for your schedule. Starting January 8, 2007 the Educational Technology Certificate program will have a virtual offering.

The virtual offerings will be the same courses that we offer in our face-to-face program but with the added flexibility of going through the content on your own time. Just like the face-to-face program you can take one or sign up for all three. All three courses are required for the new Educational Technology (NP) endorsement. See the College News column for more information about the endorsement. The courses and their scheduled dates are as follows:

  • CEP 810: Teacher for Understanding with Computers
    January 8 – March 3, 2007
  • CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technologies to Education
    March 5 – April 28, 2007
  • CEP 812: Applying Educational Technology to Problems of Practice

We are limiting the number of participants to 10 students for the first round of courses. If you are interested in signing up for these courses please call Brook Thompson at 517-432-9259 to reserve your spot. Based on other online courses in the College of Education we believe the 10 spots will fill up very rapidly.

We will continue to offer our face-to-face program in districts throughout the State of Michigan. We have new courses beginning in January in Forest Hills and Pinckney along with our current sites. Please see Location Information for locations and dates of our current offerings. You can also bring the program to your district. All you need is a minimum of 15 teachers and a computer lab.
