CEPSE WEB SITE GETS A FACE LIFT

Over the past several months directors, coordinators and secretaries of each program in the Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education (CEPSE) Department  were asked to review their web sites in anticipation of the upcoming redesign of the department web site.  All of their hard work and the hard work of the College of Education web team, Sueriya Pasupathy and Emily Brozovic, paid off  with the unveiling of the new, innovative site.  You can check it out at http://www.educ.msu.edu/cepse/.  Let’s us know what you think!

This is just one of many web projects that the College of Education has undergone.  Most of the other departments within the College have revised their web sites to help create a more updated and consistent look.  Pictures on all the department web sites have also been updated to showcase the newly renovated Erickson Hall giving those of you who are alumni a chance to see how far the building has come.  The final project will be the overall College of Education site so stay tuned for future updates.

College of Education Graduate School Programs Top National Rankings:  7 Graduate Programs in the Top 10

MSU’s College of Education has done it again. For the 15th year in a row the college’s graduate programs in elementary and secondary education have been ranked number 1 in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report guide to “America’s Best Graduate Schools”.

A total of seven educational specialties at Michigan State University placed within the top-10 based on a survey of more than 278 education school deans across the country. They include rehabilitation counseling, which retained its No. 1 ranking (from 2007), curriculum and instruction (No. 2), higher education administration (No. 4), educational psychology (No. 5) and administration/supervision (No. 8). In addition, the College of Education was ranked 17th overall.

“For 15 years now, these rankings have recognized our continuing commitment to address critical issues in education through both high quality research and teaching,” said Carole Ames, dean of the College of Education. “We take pride in our faculty and programs that prepare effective, global-minded educators for the challenges of the future.”

  • reputation
  • faculty resources
  • research activity
  • student selectivity
  • overall rank
  • specialty rankings

I am Dr. Punya Mishra, Director of the MAET program at Michigan State University. As we all know, technology is changing at an amazing pace. These changes offer great possibilities but also challenges to us as educators.

Our MAET program, housed in one of the highest ranked colleges of Education, offers teachers a conceptually grounded, hands-on experience with teaching and learning with technology. The emphasis is not just on learning “cool tools” (though that does happen) but rather on developing transformational and creative approaches to teaching subject matter in real contexts. All this is done in an intense but engaging series of experiences led by a select team of instructors who seek to model and scaffold similar approaches in the summer cohort.

I am particularly proud of the East Lansing summer program where you will take classes that will apply towards your master’s degree in Educational Technology.  After completing the Educational Technology Certificate Program, students apply to the Master’s program to join the East Lansing summer cohort.

This hybrid version of the program combines the power of working together in a summer cohort with the flexibility of completing courses during the academic year. Participants come together for two weeks of face-to-face on-campus in East Lansing from June 17 – July 1, 2009 and then meet online from July 2 – July 29. On July 30, 2009 students will reconvene on campus. This makes for a unique and intense experience to work, learn and collaborate with each other and the instructors in a face-to-face setting that is hard to duplicate. Our graduates speak highly of this experience.

We know you have many choices available to you today. Our goal, here at the MAET program, is to offer you a master’s program that help develop ways of thinking and doing that will stand you in good stead as a professional in the years to come.

You can find application materials at

http://edutech.msu.edu/apply_masters.html.

Applications are due soon and we would be very honored to have you as a member of the 2009 summer cohort.

Do let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely

Pinckney High School Connects with Algerian High School in E3Link Project

Students at Pinckney High School have been participating in the E3Link Project since the start of the program in September 2006. Recently their connection went beyond the PowerPoint presentations they shared with their partner school. They had the opportunity to connect with their Algerian partner school via a video conference. As part of the video conference U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, made a visit to Pinckney and Ambassador Robert Ford visited the Algerian partner school. Students were able to ask questions of each other to learn more about the other country’s culture. You can read more about the video conference and what students had to say about their experience by visiting http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008803050375 and http://www.dailypressandargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/

State of Michigan Endorsement Changes

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

The Michigan’s Department of Education has made a change to all endorsements effective immediately. All endorsements are now required to be 20 credits rather than 18 credits. Due to this change our Educational Technology Endorsement has been changed to meet this new requirement.

Originally the Educational Technology Endorsement at Michigan State was 18 credits, 6 courses. It has now changed to be 21 credits, 7 courses. Currently anyone that is pursuing the Endorsement will need to add a 7th course from the Master’s in Educational Technology program.

In order to learn more about the Educational Technology Endorsement please visit the Endorsement page of the Master’s website.

The New Educational Technology (NP) Endorsement

This new 6-course endorsement program prepares teachers to utilize technology resources for their own teaching and for student learning in classes for which they hold other endorsements. They are also well-prepared to teach introductory computer-related classes for which no specific endorsement is needed such as Computers, Computer Literacy, Keyboarding, Word Processing, Computer Applications, Web Design, and Introduction to the Internet.

The endorsement courses are being offered during the summer in East Lansing as hybrid courses.   Teachers will attend 10 days of class in the summer starting mid June, work online for the rest of the course duration, and then attend a final day in early August to share projects.   Additional options include a summer program in Traverse City and Plymouth, England or online starting Fall 2007.  Teachers must enroll in the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program in order to take these courses.

Endorsement Requirements

The endorsement requires the three courses (9 graduate credits) of the Educational Technology Certificate program as well as:

  • CEP 800: Psychology of Learning in School and Other Settings (3 credits)
  • CEP 801: Psychological Development: Learner Differences and Strategies (3 credits)
  • CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Research (3 credits)

After completing the 18 graduate credits for the endorsement teachers only need 12 more graduate credits to complete the entire Masters program offered throughout the school year online.

To learn more about enrolling in the Masters program and obtaining the endorsement you may contact Sue Way at 517-432-7195 or waysusan@msu.edu.
